Now Hiring: Sendero SART Support Team member



The Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) is a specially trained team comprised of doctors, nurses, RCMP, and support workers that provide care to individuals who have been recently sexually assaulted. Within this team, the Sendero Centre provides 24-hour accompaniment for patients at the Red Deer Regional Hospital.


Duties:

  • Accompany survivors of sexual violence and other accompanying individuals who are seeking medical examination or evidence collection at the Red Deer Regional Hospital (RDRH)*.

  • Provide support, information, applicable resources, and safety plan, if applicable.

  • Work in partnership with the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner team of nurses to provide crisis intervention, case management, and other accompaniment services at the hospital.

  • Must be within 45 minutes of the RDRH while on-call.

  • Responsibilities may vary based on the needs of the patient, their families, and the nursing team.

  • We do not provide medical services, medical or legal advice, or counselling.


Average time at hospital: 2-4 hours


Goal:

The goal of the SSST is to facilitate immediate crisis intervention by providing support, information and referrals. This timely intervention will assist survivors of sexual violence in their healing journey.


Process:

  • Once patient arrives at RDRH, an operator from Select Call Centre will contact the SSST and provide responder with SART nurse contact information.

  • When you arrive at RDRH, you will notify responding nurse and they will direct you to area of the hospital to meet.

-If there is no response, proceed to the Emergency Department, update the responding nurse of your location, and wait for instructions.

  • Proceed to location indicated by hospital staff and wait for instruction from CASART nurse.

-You may be connected with the patient immediately. If not, connect with the support people of the patient, or wait in the designated area for further instructions.

  • When meeting the patient, ensure you are introducing yourself, your role, and what support is available.

  • Provide the patient with support, care and compassion. You may be also required to obtain items such as food or blankets (provided by the hospital) for the patient, or safety plan such as calling local shelters or securing taxi services.

  • Provide the patient with information and resources (Sendero Centre if applicable).

  • Hospital On-Call Form to be completed and input into iCarol in a timely manner.


Qualifications:

  • Related work experience and/or degree or diploma in Human Services, understanding of dynamics of sexual violence and possess crisis intervention skills. Equivalencies may be considered such as a minimum of six months experience on Sendero Centre’s 24-Hour Support Line. Must have ready access to reliable transportation.


Commitment:

Twelve-month commitment – At least four weekday shifts per month, and one weekend per month or equivalent – including at least 1-2 long weekends per year.
